How to Lose the Vacation Weight: Why Most of It Will Be Gone by Friday

You're home, the suitcase is unpacked, and the scale says +6. Here's the anatomy of post-vacation weight — how much is water, how much is real, and the 7-day protocol that gets you back on trend without a punishment diet.

The post-vacation weigh-in is one of the most demoralizing moments in all of dieting. A week of great food, a flight home, and the scale delivers its verdict: up 5, 6, 7 lbs. I know the feeling personally — I came home from a Vegas weekend up 8 lbs at day 115 of my own cut.

Here's what that number actually is, and the exact protocol for erasing it.

The Anatomy of a +6

Suppose the scale reads six pounds up after a week away. Run the math on what's physically possible. To gain 6 lbs of fat, you'd need to eat roughly 21,000 calories over maintenance — 3,000 extra every single day on top of a normal day's food. Vacations are indulgent; they are rarely that indulgent.

A realistic breakdown of that +6: 2-3 lbs of glycogen and its water (a carb-rich week refills muscle stores, and every gram of glycogen holds 3-4 grams of water), 1-2 lbs of sodium water (restaurant food, every meal, for a week), half a pound to a pound of extra food mass still in transit, and — the honest slice — maybe 1-2 lbs of actual fat, and that's if the week was genuinely heavy.

So the real damage is usually a pound or two. The rest is water with a return ticket.

The 7-Day Reset Protocol

Day 1: weigh in and don't flinch. Log the scary number — it's your "after salt water" reading, not your body. Skipping the weigh-in for a guilt-week just delays the good news. After Vegas, my own 8 lbs took exactly 7 days to drain; watching it leave was the most motivating part of the week.

Days 1-7: return to your normal plan. Not a harsher one. This is the step everyone gets wrong. The instinct is atonement — 1,000 calories, double cardio, a juice cleanse. But crash-restricting stresses a body that's already inflamed from travel, and unsustainable punishment is how a one-week blip becomes a six-week spiral. Your regular deficit was already working. Go back to it.

Walk more than usual. 8,000-12,000 steps daily this week. Movement accelerates the water flush, burns real calories, and repairs the routine — without spiking hunger the way punishment cardio does.

Watch sodium and drink water. A week of home-cooked food at normal salt levels is what lets the retained water go. Counterintuitively, drinking more water speeds this up — hydration signals your body it's safe to release its reserves.

Day 7: judge. One week back on plan, most people are within a pound or two of their pre-trip weight. That residual is the real cost of the vacation — and against a week of living fully, a pound is a bargain.

The Bigger Fix

If vacations keep costing you a month of momentum, the problem isn't the trips — it's the all-or-nothing structure around them. Next time, don't abandon tracking at the departure gate: eat at maintenance, walk the destination, log meals with one tap. That's exactly what Vacation Mode in ShredCoach automates — and the difference between coming home +6 and coming home flat.

The vacation was never the threat. The panic afterward was.
